Colour science without the fog: RGBL, RGBALC and why extra emitters matter
Red, green and blue can produce millions of colours, so why do modern fixtures add lime, amber, cyan or royal blue?

Adding more LED colours is not simply a way to make a specification look impressive. The purpose is to fill gaps in the colour spectrum and give designers more control over difficult colours.
Where RGB reaches its limits
Traditional RGB mixing is excellent for bold saturated looks, but pale tints, warm whites and natural skin tones can reveal its limitations. Additional emitters provide more direct routes to those colours.
What the extra letters do
- Lime can support more convincing whites.
- Amber strengthens warm tones and tungsten-style looks.
- Cyan broadens the palette between green and blue.
- Royal blue can deepen saturated blues and violets.
Control still matters
Good calibration, sensible DMX modes, consistent dimming and useful CCT control determine whether the extra colours are easy to use. For broadcast, theatre and close audience work, PWM options and fan behaviour may also matter.
