Custom cable maker: six checks before a build reaches the workshop
Connector choice is only one part of a dependable custom cable. Signal type, cable construction, length, direction and labelling all need to agree.
A useful cable configurator must prevent impossible combinations, but it should also help customers describe a real requirement accurately.
1. Confirm the signal or power standard
Connectors that appear mechanically similar may be intended for different signals, ratings or wiring conventions.
2. Check gender and direction
Some assemblies are reversible, while others have a clear source and destination.
3. Choose the right cable family
Flexibility, conductor size, screening, impedance and jacket material matter.
4. Set a realistic length
Allow for routing and strain relief without creating unnecessary coils.
5. Describe the environment
Indoor, outdoor, touring, installed and public-access applications can require different protection.
6. Make identification part of the build
Heat-shrink labels, colour coding and asset references can save hours over the cable lifetime. Unusual requests should be routed to a person rather than guessed.
